It's true that English is a Seafarers and traders language and has been for over 1000 years. But, why would they call the ocean "The Whales Road"?
It makes sense because they didn't snorkel then that I know of so unless you were a fisherman you wouldn't know much about what was in the ocean then.
However, Whales are impressive because often they are as big as a house or larger. So, when one of these things comes up from diving and spouts water blowing it's blow hole to get another breath of fresh air this is going to scare the hell out of you if you aren't prepared for this. So, you could be very impressed with seeing a whale ANY time at all on the ocean.
So, calling the Ocean "The Whales Road" makes complete sense to me in this context.
I have often sailed with my cousin when I was 20 in 1968 from Marina Del Rey or other ports in Los Angeles to Catalina Island and I have also had this experience when whales or dolphins come up when you least expect them near your boat. It's also possible that they come up near your boat because at first they think you are another whale and the same for dolphins. So, It's quiet or dark or light out and suddenly everything changes and you might be covered with whale spray from them clearing their blow holes for another breath before they sound (go down deep) once again as they travel the ocean. I often watch the Grey Whales from the shore near where I live. You often cannot see the whales but you can see them spouting water spray when they clear their blow holes going south from Alaska to the Gulf of California for Breeding or heading north later in the Spring and summer for Alaska once again.
