You have to be fairly strong and likely used to using an axe for cutting a tree or a pick like one uses or for using a mall to split wood to use one of these effectively. You hold it up by the handle near the blade over your head and then snap it down by sliding your hand down to the base of the wood for maximum thrust (hopefully 9 to 12 inches into the ground if there aren't rocks there) and then you pull up on your handle which allows you to plant a tree very quickly. Then a good planter could make 100 dollars in a day in the late 1970s doing this which was a lot of money then. You got paid by how many trees you planted in that day and were paid a certain amount per planted tree. If you were paid by the hour it likely wouldn't be worth doing this at all.
