dedicated on the feast day of John the Baptist, on June 24, 1797.
The mission, founded in 1797, is the oldest; it was located here by Padre Fermin Francisco de Lasuen because there were many Indians in the area.
San Juan Bautista was the second of five missions built as part of a major expansion of the Alta California mission system.
