At the time we had been married only 2 years and had a new baby so the family side of this movie we really liked. Also, my wife always wanted a 4 wheel drive with a snorkel so she could literally drive through a river with a 4 by 4 without killing the engine because the air intake is about at the level of the car or truck roof or so.
Also, it was about 17 years or so after the Mt. St. Helens Eruption and people were still trying to get over that in Oregon with all the people that died there in that eruption.

i just watched this movie not too long ago after not seeing it for many
many years.and all i got to say about Dante's Peak is, this movie is
