So, what I learned today (but also might have learned around 2010 maybe):
- is that Mackiernan and Bessac were not only "listening for Nukes going off and being tested with advanced Electronic surveillance at the time, they were also trying to aid Tibet in Fighting off the Chinese. However, Tanks and Planes defeated Tibet eventually through Khampa warriors being Straffed by planes and blown apart by Tank shells and machine guns. A rider with a good rifle is no match for planes and tanks.
-
- However, Bessac was also an Anthropologist studying Tibetan and Chinese culture at that time too so likely he brought home a lot of knowledge about both Tibet and China to the U.S. and Europe then too.
- Begin quote regarding the book "Into Tibet".
-
- Author: Thomas Laird
- Subject: Douglas S. Mackiernan, the CIA's first "atomic spy," and his secret expedition into Tibet in 1949-1950
- Mission objective: To gather intelligence on Soviet atomic plans and uranium deposits in Tibet, and to arm the Tibetan resistance
- Outcome: Mackiernan was killed during the mission, making him the first CIA officer to die in the line of duty
- Content:
The book details the mission's background, the intrigue, and the events
leading to the Chinese invasion of Tibet, which was hastened by the
expedition's actions. It includes details about Mackiernan's partner,
Frank Bessac, and their journey.
