I was watching on TV with my wife and Grandson, King Kong (1933) and it
seemed a lot different to me than when I first saw it as a child in the 1950s
likely between the ages of 6 and 9 years of age for the first time on TV. Then I realized it was because I was also attached to King Kong 1976 with Jeff Bridges and Jessica Lange as the leads in the later one. So, when I saw the original I guess I expected to see Jessica Lange at this point instead of Fay Wray or something. Then there is also a later one than this called "Kong at Skull Island" which is very very different than the first two as well that I have also seen.
This first one in 1933 is now obviously very racist but when I saw it in the 1950s (likely after 1954 sometime when we bought our very first black and white TV as a family) I didn't see it as racist because that is not how we tended to view things then.
Then everyone was kind of racist against each others ethnic group or country of origin more than now. What people now call racism is really just a lot of ignorant people who haven't met people of other nationalities or races at all so they are ignorant. Mostly that is what it was then too.
Remember in the 1950s very very few people went to college then of any race and most people I knew mostly hadn't graduated even high school. (But both my parents had) but even they hadn't been to college at all (even though my father was valedictorian of his high school Class in Seattle then in 1934. He was an electrical Contractor like his father and brother then in the 1960s.
