Condom Use in the 1970s

Basically, among all the men I knew around my age during the 1970s almost none reported using a condom more than 5% of the time. There was an exception to this, however. If you were in the military you always used a condom because it was sort of a requirement as a serviceman so you wouldn't become incapacitated as a serviceman and become unable to function as a sailor or soldier. Condom use began to become more prevalent in the late 1970s when things like Herpes became more widespread. Then in the 1980s when AIDS came about there was a major push in the U.S. for everyone to use condoms that wasn't married and hadn't been to a doctor to see if they were HIV or not. So, mostly it is because of the millions of deaths since the early 1980s worldwide that condom use has become so prevalent here in the U.S and around the world. Here is a worldwide graphic of the approximate numbers of people now alive in most countries with HIV.
