Of course there are the times when you are crossing a street and a bus is about to hit you or a wild boar is attacking your car or when your girlfriend pulls a butcher knife on you (I have experienced all these things by the way) that freaking out a little might pull you into your body enough to survive it. But, most of the time panicking is only going to give you a heart attack or stroke or get you killed or throw you into a full fledged panic attack which often mimic a heart attack.
So, I have realized that since this is true finding a way to remain calm when everyone around you is freaking out is always useful. Also, panicking when over 40 or 50 is a sure way to have a heart attack or stroke and just keel over dead.
So, if you want to live a long time panicking won't do that. Maybe taking up meditation to learn to control your breath and heartbeat and blood pressure might be helpful.
