Visiting Castle Lake: 1953 to 2014 so far

I was wandering around looking at a new foot path exotic looking bridge across Lake Siskiyou (you cannot see this from the paved road. You have to either go behind the lake to see this or know where it is to find it, when I realized I had been coming now to the Lake Siskiyou (it didn't exist then because it was only a river then in 1953. So, I know the dam for Lake Siskiyou had to be built some time after 1964 something like that. Because I used to drive across a little bridge on the river to get to Castle lake and back to Shasta Springs then.

So, anyway, I realized that I have been visiting Castle Lake since I was 5 and lived in San Diego with my parents then for 61 years! It seemed way to long a time because it now seems much shorter than that but you know how life is.

That first trip up to Castle lake in Northern California off of Interstate 5 was on a very dirt and rocky road then. It wasn't paved for several years after this in 1953. That first time there was no one there simply because it was just too rough if you didn't have a truck or a 4 wheel drive. In fact, the man we rode up with tore his whole muffler system out on the way up on the rocks they were so bad. So, it was pretty loud coming down. It was a brand new 1953 Chevrolet car with two tones of yellow and white like they did then.

Another funny story is in 1956 my father wanted a new Century Buick and put a picture of one up. He told everyone he was going to get a blue one. But, because the picture was also a yellow and white two tone that's what we wound up with.

So, be careful combining pictures and prayers unless it is exactly what you want. We loved the yellow and white two tone Buick and had it for 4 years before Dad traded it in on a 1960 Mercury Stationwagon which was really fun to ride in because it was huge inside and we still didn't wear seatbelts until the 1980s in the U.S. mostly.
