Because we are a two party political system and have been for about 150 years or more even though periodically third or fourth parties give the other two parties a run for their money.
I think the best way to describe "WHY?" this is so scary is an analogy I used recently in a blog article. I was describing the Galaxy we live in as "Controlled Chaos". But our political system is also controlled chaos as well. We have put many checks and balances in place and right now none of them are working. So, because of this our democracy in a Republic isn't working either.
So, why is our political system Controlled chaos just like our Galaxy.
You might not like my analogy but I think it is appropriate.
A Galaxy is composed of a huge black hole in the center which is the cohesion of the whole galaxy so it doesn't just fly apart in all directions into space.
If you take the Republican party as the gravity that holds the Galaxy together (Conservatism) and the force of the stars and planets wanting to be free of this conservatism the mass of the planets wanting to leave the galaxy. We pretty much understand what is happening here.
Without the stars and planets wanting to leave the galaxy and go out on their own without a galaxy all stars and planets would fall into the black hole and die.
But, without the Black hole that has gravity waves that draws all stars, planets and nebula towards it as they spiral around it we wouldn't have a galaxy at all. Instead we would just have a bunch of stars, planets and nebula flying out in all directions alone.
So, let's think about this for a moment.
If all there were were conservative Republicans with no Democrats there would be no minorities living in the U.S. They would have to be all white Wasps. No Jewish people either. Everyone would have a gun that they wore on their hip or in their pocket and the people would shoot each other and the police and people would often shoot each other and it might somewhat resemble Hitler's Germany in effect.
Then imagine if there were no Republicans at all in the U.S. There would be no candidates who were white and no congresspeople who weren't mixed race and the president would be gay or transexual and no one would be allowed to own a gun and after they took over all the guns out government would collapse into a dictarship within or without within 50 to 75 years because we couldn't defend ourselves from either criminals or the Police or Armies (both here and abroad).
Under the Republican only system anyone other than whites wouldn't be safe anywhere in the U.S.
Under the Democratic system no one who wasn't a gay or transexual or multi-racial would be safe in the U.S. because they just wouldn't be diverse enough for the rest of the people to take them seriously.
So, why am I worried about the demise of the Republican party into insignificance?
Because without it we are headed towards the problems if there were only democrats in power for 100 years or more as presidents form here on.
Our system of government only works because both parties provide a useful function to all the people. Otherwise, people would just rise up and kill all the other party. And because of the hysterical nature of Tea Party people I think eventually the moderate Republicans and Conservative Republicans along with ALL the Democrats are going to rise up and kill the Tea partiers(not literally but figuratively) for interfering with the normal operations of government for too long. This likely will happen within 10 to 20 years mark my words.
So, what's happening to the Republican Party?
Demographics is happening to the Republican Party. They no longer have the votes because all the old white people who are the Republicans are dying too fast. They are not being replaced by new young white folks (who tend to be liberal at least through college until they are about 30 generally fast enough.
Basically, white people don't reproduce if they cannot afford more kids generally speaking. But, because immigrants have a culture of having as many kids as possible so they have someone to take care of them when they are old they don't change to the white system.
This freaks out the whites and makes the minorities lives more difficult. But, they are used to more difficult lives than white Republicans are generally speaking.
So, what is going to happen?
In the short run Republicans are going to become more and more desperate and create militias and interfere with government in all sorts of ways thinking somehow they can go back to the way things were. However, Basically they can't. A majority White Republican Party is demographically over.
And this part won't change.
Just look at Fox News. The average age of someone watching this network is 72 and going up daily to higher and higher ages. It is sort of like expecting there to be a lot of World War II veterans 20 years from now. We might be lucky if there are 10 or 100 or 1000 in the whole country at that point because all of them are going to be over 100 years old then!
The Republican Party is dying like an army that will not give up! and many will fight to the death having zero hope of success just on principle. But, that doesn't mean they can win unless they create a Nazi Germany type of government here by taking away the vote from all minorities. However, this is exactly what many are trying to do especially in southern States right now.
So, what's going to happen? I think many people might get so desperate that they might create militias and start dying by fighting the government as the government becomes more and more Democratic every year.
So, hopefully, the uneducated Tea Party gets wise about demographics and understands that nationally they cannot win again without changing a lot. At the very least they have to let in and court conservative Hispanics or the Republican party is dead and buried within about 20 to 50 years completely.
And what will happen to our country? I don't know but I'm hoping the Galaxy of the United States doesn't fly apart into space (or at least into many different countries that used to be called the 50 States.)
