Local media said someone in the center in Sagamihara, near Tokyo, called police about 2:30 a.m. to say something horrible was happening.
About two hours later, a 26-year-old man turned himself in to police at a Sagamihara station, authorities said.
He said, “I did it,” local media reported. The man left his knife in his car outside, police said.

He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and trespassing, authorities said.
Japanese TV showed dozens of ambulances outside the facility in Sagamihara. The death toll makes it the worst mass stabbing in Japan in recent years. In 2008, a man randomly attacked shoppers in a Tokyo mall with a knife and left seven dead. In 2001, a man with a history of mental illness stabbed eight children to death in a primary school in Osaka.
