Yes. But not in the way most people think.
To be incarnated into a human form is completely paradoxical in ways you might not think.
To be a human being inside any culture on earth is to be in a state of hypnosis or in a state of mass hypnosis at the very least.
Everything is transferred into symbols like words and picture thoughts that are not universal among all humans. So, people are conditioned to be controlled within that culture in a slave like, Pavlov like way. So, as you move from teenage to adulthood often you find all rules (to some degree) are made to be broken.
Or you stay a slave the rest of your life to this kind of conditioning. It is useful often to maintain one's position in life to be able to deal with the psychological conditioning within that culture. But, should you go to any other culture you must change your point of view and reference or likely you might be killed by that other culture.
So, unless you likely do a 40 day water fast like Jesus did or Buddha did or a 4 day vision quest without water OR Food, you likely will never really know what a human being actually is separate from cultural conditioning when through doing this out in the wilderness alone you realize you are not separate from nature in any way (at least physically). This causes a type of enlightenment like occurred in Jesus and Buddha in the past and many ever since.
Note: After reading this to my wife she wanted me to continue writing more about this to clarify things.
Even though every thing I'm writing here is true, it is also true that not all people have the mental, emotional or physical health to go through 40 days fasting on water or even 4 days without water or food. There are many people who in doing something like this would either die or go crazy (one of the two).
You have to be sort of ready for what will greet you. IF you cannot withstand what greets you then you don't make it either mentally or physically.
So, this path likely isn't for everyone because not everyone can survive doing this mentally, emotionally and physically.
So, this should be stressed also.
Some people think everything has to be just one way. However, in reality: "There is nothing good or bad but thinking makes it so."
So, my point of view is that if you don't have compassion for yourself and all life on earth maybe this isn't the path for you in the first place because you might not survive the outcome if your motivation is not to help all mankind as well as yourself into a more enlightened state.
I have never even tried once go to 40 days without food and only drinking water. However, I have a friend that likely has done this once a year since I have known him and is in his 70s. However, even in my 20s I never would have done something like this because most people cannot stay that altered for that long and come back from it and be normal again.
However, I have gone 4 days and 4 nights without water or food (96hours) and this was one of the best things I have ever done in my life and I have become much more fearless (in a useful way) than I ever was before. However, I was only 35 years old then in 1983 and had excellent health and lived in the out of doors at altitude all the time then.
By doing a 4 day no water and no food vision quest I began to understand more what a human actually is beyond ANY culture or ANY religion and knowing this was very very healing for me in a variety of ways and gave me a more useful perspective of what we human beings actually are.
