Salton Sea - Wikipedia

Near Kit Carson park in Escondido we turned towards Ramona on roads while noticing all the fire engines staging there. We saw at least 20 to 50 engines staging there for fighting the Lilac Fire between Bonsall and Oceanside. We saw engines from Arizona, Fresno and I believe Vallejo there as well. So, fire engines from all over the state as well as other states too in San Diego County. Also, there is the Liberty fire in I believe Murrieta Hot Springs area too and then the Thomas Fire burning north to Santa Barbara area too. However, this staging area likely was only for the Lilac fire from Bonsall to Oceanside.

Then we drove to Ramona and my wife enjoyed going through some antique shops there. We stopped in Julian at 4000 feet elevation and had some nice food and stuff at a restaurant called Soup and something else near the end of town. I decided to take 78 all the way to Anza-Borrego State park and took a cut off while near there to Borrego Springs and hiked and walked around a little. Later there was an amazing sunset we took pictures of between Borrego Springs and the Salton Sea.

At the Visitor center at the Borrego Springs state park Visitor Center I learned something I was amazed by. There were Mammoth elephants that lived in this area at one time and saber toothed tigers etc. Also, there was an inland sea here as well. The Salton Sea area is actually about -250 feet below sea level and here's the kicker (The Gulf of California would extend to Indio except for one thing which is the River Delta from thousands of years of the Colorado River. So, without that river delta there the ocean would come into Indio once again up the Gulf of California like it did before. This is a really amazing area by the way. In the summer it might reach 125 or 130 but in the winter you are going to see it be mostly above 70 degrees at least during the days. At nights however it can be sometimes below freezing too. Desert temperatures especially in winter can easily vary 50 to 70 degrees so even if it is 70 during the day there might be places where it will go from 70 to 20 or 30. So, if you are going to be on the desert in the winter time be prepared for big temperature swings. And From about April to October or after always have enough water in case your car breaks down out in the middle of nowhere because it can be amazingly dry like almost no where else on earth.

From Escondido to Borrego Springs if there is no traffic is about 1 1/2 to 2 hours depending up on how fast you  drive that route out 78.

Note: I'm wondering if the ocean is eventually going to come back into Indio and the Salton SEa eventually since the water doesn't really reach the Colorado River Delta much because it is siphoned off in canals and pipes by so many cities and localities now that almost none makes it to the gulf of California and Mexico.
