About 10 years ago I was away from home near Boston and I was feeling a little "out of place" on the East Coast with my California thoughts and ways. I found in a museum a copy of "The Pocket Dalai Lama" and bought it and zipped it into my ski jacket I wear when it's cold (I also ski in it too on Mt. Shasta) and it gave me peace at the time because I felt sort of away from home in that moment.
So, for 10 years now I have carried this in one of my ski jackets along with ear buds for my Iphone, a few tums (so i don't get reflux) which can be bad if you eat the wrong thing after ages 40 and above (I'm almost 70 now). (It's probably 2 or 3 ski jackets later at this point.
Anyway, i found this book once again while looking for a container of dental floss (my ski jacket sometimes takes the place of a day pack as you can see). I opened it at random to see what wisdom the Dalai Lama was going to share with me today. Here is what I opened to:
Title of the Chapter "Wanted: A Spiritual Revolution"
Quote: "Irrespective of different philosophies, the most important thing is to have a tamed and disciplined mind and a warm heart."
end quote.
I agree. Discipline is important but I find that the best way to tame and discipline your mind is to follow your heart. By being in the right place at the right time one attains peace when one attains peace more permanently one naturally becomes disciplined because once you attain peace and enlightenment in any form you will do almost anything to maintain this peace and enlightenment.
Because of this you naturally become disciplined by needing to be at peace and enlightened.
It's sort of like if you are drowning you will do anything to get air.
Peace and enlightenment is like this too.
Once you experience it you will literally climb the highest mountain to keep and maintain your peace and enlightenment. You will discipline in any way you need to get and to maintain your peace and enlightenment and then the next step is to help all others to enlightenment.
Enlightenment is very individualistic I find. So, helping others attain enlightenment and maintaining your own enlightenment brings peace and happiness not only to yourself but to all beings around you.
