Why I stopped being a Republican in the 1970s because of Nixon

Like Hillary Clinton who was also raised a Republican I felt so betrayed by Nixon that I could not longer vote Republican ever again even though I was raised by a Father and Grandfather who were both Conservative Republicans. The Betrayal of Nixon is similar now to the Betrayal of Trump of Republican voters. Trump hasn't betrayed rich Republicans but he has betrayed rank and file middle Class and poor Repbublicans if they are actually keeping track of how many lies he has told and how deeply he has betrayed them so far.

So, I believe many millions of Republicans (just like many millions or us in the 1970s) will jump ship out of the Reupublican party because of Trump just like they did because of the Nixon betrayal in the 1970s.

For me, being a Republican was more about family tradition than anything else, but my father completely understood I was making an ethical choice giving up permanently on the Republican party at the time because of Nixon.

At first I became a democrat but over time I became an independent because I saw it wasn't either party that saved our democracy in a Republic. It was our two party system that always saves our democracy in the end. I could see the good and bad of both Republican and Democratic views. And I always choose now to vote for what is best for my country because sometimes BOTH the Republicans and Democrats are wrongheaded and would destroy our country given the chance.

So, unless you vote country over party you might lose your country and your democracy in a Republic at some point in the near or far future.
