It's sunny today and driving down yesterday I hit temperatures as high as 82 degrees around Paso Robles and Atascadero. But, most of the way it was around 79 or 80 degrees from about Gonzales onward south on 101. I was surprised when i got to the Alisal fire though because the fire was different than I thought. Some places the fire burned all the way across 101 to the ocean but most places it didn't. Most of the fire was in wild oaks and wild grasses which can be very difficult to fight because it tends to burn so very quickly especially with a wind in tall wild grasses. But, some places it was Eucalyptus trees and Chaparral burning too depending upon many different factors like the wind different times of day while it was burning. I think about 25 homes and building burned of ranchers because this country is mostly cattle ranches and some farming from a few miles south of where the northbound tunnel is on 101. So, the fire was seen (the ashes) was about 5 miles south of where you first see the ocean driving south from Buellton to a few miles north of Goleta. I closed my window though because the smell of burned things was pretty bad for several miles there along the coast.
However, north of the Golden Gate bridge they expect over 10 inches of rain on Sunday and Monday which could give us about 10 to 15% of our yearly rainfall. The main problem with this is wherever fires have been there could be severe mudslides. So, the rain is desperately needed but if we get that much all at once it could be a disaster for many people who live below burn areas especially in the foothills or mountains around northern California. The rain is also supposed to bring rain as far south as San Diego on Monday as well which is really good if that happens.
