It's true that every year is different and this is one of those very different years where the Polar Vortex came down enough to drop the snow level even as far south as San Francisco and below to around 1000 to 1300 feet. This is very low. I can remember is snowing when I was a child in Tujunga up near the mountains in Los Angeles when I was 6 or 7 years old. But, this is very rare for that far south. Where I live now having several inches of hail that soon melts wasn't unusual in the winters since around 2000 even here 1 mile from the ocean. But, after Talking to friends up north getting stuck and Interstate 5 closing and about 100 cars stuck in the snow on 99 between Ashland and Yreka area is somewhat unusual. My friend said the problem was that these people were taking a big risk and only had mostly front wheel drive cars that then jack knifed and were sideways on the road as my friends slowly drove by when they could. Two wheel drive in conditions like this without at least chains is pretty dangerous any way that you look at it. And unless you know how to put on chains so they don't destroy your fenders or brake lines this is another danger. Like, for me, the very last thing I want to do ever is to put on chains because I have seen all the snow nightmares of torn brake lines on people's cars and fenders ripped off by chains either installed wrong or the chains were too cheap and defective. So,the very last thing I ever want to do is to. put on chains. So, because of that I don't even own a car that isn't either all wheel drive or a 4 wheel drive because of seeing this around MT. Shasta when I lived up there or visited there in the winters.
However, I also am a little concerned that we might be in a cyclic event where we have another 1862 flood which is a periodic thing that actually happens here in California at least every 150 to 300 years like clockwork.
The last time this happened was 1862 when they had to move the Capitol to San Francisco from Sacramento by Boat. Because there were no roads between Sacramento to San Francisco then that were useful to travel on for about 6 months time or more.
