Before today's life preservers men would take off their bell bottom sailor pants and tie off the legs and capture air in the bells so they could float until they might be rescued by a friendly ship or a log or a piece of a blown up ship.
However, when a ship sank or blew up and men were in the water it was usually those older than 23 to 25 that survived. Why?
Because by ages 23 to 25 men have seen some really crazy stuff often especially in past centuries. So, they often have already survived things that they didn't think possible before already. So, the point is you stay calm enough and you have a chance to survive all this. If you panic you will soon sink and drown. This is the reality of a naval vessel sinking that you were on.
So, if the men didn't believe they could survive they often didn't unless they listened to older men who had already survived times when they thought they were going to die. So, the older men tended to survive ships sinking more than the youngest of men did for this reason. It's all really about life experience in the end whether you survive or not.
