Jason Momoa is very excited about his mysterious future with DC Studios

His role as Aquaman had been thrown into question, but a new character could be on the table

Jason Momoa is very excited about his future with DC Studios, which is something no one expected to hear following the recent cull of his Snyderverse cohorts.

The past few months have not been a peaceful time for anyone in the DCEU orbit. Following Dwayne Johnson's excitable release of Black Adam, which promised to ‘change the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe’, the franchise behemoth was forced to walk back his statements, tail between his legs, as it emerged his future with the studio wouldn't be going ahead. Along with him was Henry Cavill, who announced his grand return to the DCEU with a cameo in Black Adam, only to be told a month later that new studio heads James Gunn and Peter Safran were changing the course of their vision for Superman. Finally, Wonder Woman 3 with Patty Jenkins, who spearheaded Gal Gadot's entry into the universe with the first two films, was scrapped.

If anyone has the authority to tell us to clean up the planet, it’s Aquaman. So GQ sat down to talk to him about his efforts to rescue the ocean from plastic pollution and (yes, really) maybe even rescuing Timothée Chalamet again in Dune.

Though there's no official word on Gadot, it's assumed her iteration of the character has reached its end as well. Of the rest of the original Snyderverse DCEU actors, the only ones with question marks still over their heads are Ezra Miller's Flash and Jason Momoa's Aquaman. Both still have a standalone film set to be released (yes, The Flash is still going ahead), but after that their futures are unclear. However, in an Instagram story uploaded by Jason Momoa, it looks like that future at least looks bright.

The video shows him walking out of, presumably, a DC Studios office building, referencing his first casting as Aquaman: “Four years ago, I had the jeep out front… Y’all remember four years ago? I was screaming, wasn’t I? … Screaming when I left Warner Bros". He then says, “I’ve got some really good news. Great news with Warner Bros. Amazing”. He then thanks Gunn and Safran, adding “Wish I could tell you, but here it is. Peter, I love you. James, I love you. David [Zaslav, President of Warner Bros.]. Okay. To the future, to the future”.

Clearly, Momoa has reason to believe his tenure with the studio remains intact, although whether it's as Aquaman remains unclear.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, the sequel to 2018's Aquaman, hits our screens in December following COVID-19 production delays. Many assume that will be the final outing for Momoa's aquatic superhero as DC Studios moves forward with a new vision, but despite that The Hollywood Reporter claimed there are plans to keep the actor as a ‘pivotal figure’ in the new era.

While it could be Aquaman 3, it's looking more and more likely that Momoa has finally been tapped to play another DC comic book superhero, Lobo the interstellar bounty hunter. It's a role he's been fancast as for years, and rumours of his involvement with the character stem back to before he was cast as Aquaman. Gunn himself has already added fuel to the fire that Lobo is in his DC universe, as it was the first picture he uploaded after joining the social media site Mastodon.

Whatever unfolds, it's unlikely Momoa will straddle two (sea)horses to play Aquaman and Lobo in the new vision for the studio. For now, at least, it looks like he's safe from the curse of the Synderverse.
