I think this began while my daughter was still in private school and they had a Fall Break. So, we used the fall break of 2 weeks to start doing this. So, this method started I believe around 2010 around there.
However, it is true you usually have to either be retired or semi-retired in order to do this.
For example, in Europe and Hawaii it isn't so unbearably hot in October or April usually depending upon where exactly you are going.
For example, in January I have snorkeled on the Kona Coast of the big island of Hawaii and the water was 85 Degrees then in 2015 with friends then. I couldn't believe the water was 85 in January while people were skiing in Mt. Shasta at the same exact time. In fact, the water was so warm I had to get out from snorkeling to cool down from the Hawaiian Sea breezes so I didn't get overheated snorkeling there at that time.
Also, Europe in places like Edinburgh Scotland is much better in October usually too.
This last April we also traveled to Maui because we didn't want to go right after the fire last Summer in Lahaina and we stayed in Kaanapali right next to where Lahaina is on the island with another couple and had a really marvelous time there even though it was sad to see all of Lahaina still like the fire had happened yesterday still.
One of the problems they likely are facing there is that the average home now on Maui is 1.5 million dollars. This creates all sorts of problems as you can imagine regarding rebuilding and even holding onto one's land through all of this too.
So, if you can it's much better and much cooler to travel not during the summer but during the fall or spring instead so you are less likely to pass out in the heat during these times.
