White Out

My daughter and her baby and an old friend decided to go up Everitt Memorial Highway on Mt. Shasta. We weren't sure the gate would be open past Macbride Springs with the Gate there that is often closed if the snow is too heavy. However, as we drove up past the High school in Mt. Shasta we met eventually below Macbride Springs two large snow blower trucks with 7 foot high blades in front. Unfortunately, the rocks were still coming out from the back end and they got us some because likely the closing mechanism for the rocks wasn't entirely closing for some reason. But, the good part of all this is the first gate past Macbride Springs was open so we were able to drive up to Bunny Flats.

However, because we were the first car to drive up after the two snow plows there were no tracks to follow and the snow was coming down heavily too. So, just from as we drove up the road to Bunny Flat at 6900 feet there was already 4 inches or more of snow on the road. We had no trouble going up through this simply because we were in my daughter all wheel drive Car at the time. I was driving but going up the white out with no tracks was so bad I had to drive in the center of the road because I couldn't see anything literally driving up most of the way especially near Low Sand Flat Road by the way.

So, when we reached Bunny Flat there was no one there obviously and the snow was building very fast on the road too. So, since we didn't want to get snowed in with the plows already having left for the day we didn't stay long at 6900 feet because the snow level on the road was building too fast and likely would be about 1 foot deep or more within an hour or two or less depending upon how much snow fell per hour.

So, we all got out and the blizzard conditions at Bunny Flat were pretty intense and windy and cold and snow kept blowing into our faces in the winds so being there wasn't very comfortable.

However, for me, I haven't seen snow at all this snow season so this part of it was nice.

However, wisely since I'm 77 I figured I should let my daughter drive down because she has younger eyes than I do and I thought she might be able to see especially through the complete white out around Lower Sand Flat Road.

So, we all made it down safely from Bunny Flat yesterday down into town. However, the snow level was also dropping rapidly towards the little town of Mt. Shasta too so we realized that there could be snow in town by that evening or night.

However, luckily, the snowing stopped pretty much tonight as the atmospheric river has moved south mostly at least for now. I just looked outside at around 2:30 AM and though it is 33 degrees out presently the snow hasn't built up yet in town but might by this weekend. The low tonight is supposed to be around 28 degrees in town.
