At the time I didn't really see the point of college at all because my father was an electrical contractor. So, since as a contractor he made much more money than most people who went to college and he owned his own business I thought owning a business was the way to go. also, my Grandfather, my uncle and my father all owned their own Electrical Contracting businesses too.
So, in the summer of 1965 when I was 17 I wanted to drop out of high school and get a job and buy a better car (maybe a Mustang?) or a Porsche? I already owned a 1956 Ford Stationwagon then since 1964 when I bought it with money from working part time with my father and other part time jobs.
However, they wanted me to go to this church private school. I think they wanted me to go to college and that this ivy league way of thinking would seep into me maybe if I went to this private school.
Well. They were right!
I went to Santa Fe, New Mexico and I was the tallest, strongest person there and I was from California which gave me a lot of brownie points with the kids at this school too. So, I turned into more of a leader in every way and took care of all the kids younger than me and kept them from fighting each other some too.
So, after returning to Los Angeles after being the "Big Man on Campus" in more ways than one I realized I wanted to go to college after graduating from this private church school in Santa Fe.
So, then I went to Glendale College at first. Well. First I tried to get a job with IBM because I was interested in computers. However, at that time they wouldn't hire you without a bachelor's degree in Math then. And there was no way I wanted a Bachelor's degree in math anyway. So, I went to college and learned to program in Fortran and COBOL and learned to operate key punch machines and sorters and reproducers and Accounting Machines all made by IBM then in the 1960s.
Then I got a part time job with the Glendale Board of Education and worked on their IBM 1620 mainframe computer through a dumb terminal there. Then I got my first full time job automating a Warehouse in North Hollywood. Then I got a job working for a computer company operating 24 hours a day with millions of dollars worth of equipment.
However, I didn't like working 12 hours a day 7 days a week at age 20 graveyard shift. So, though I bought myself a brand new 1968 Camaro that was metallic blue that I was able to go 145 miles per hour in I soon realized that what I wanted to really do in the computer field would be 50 to 75 years from then in 1968. So, I did something else. First I went to work as an electrician in Venice because my father had trained me to be one. However, by 1970 or 1971 I realized I wanted to go back to college and study PHilosophy, Psychology and eventually Cultural Anthropology.
I was very lucky then to be able to do all this in my life looking back from now. Most people didn't have all the opportunities that I had in life. Eventually I went to UCSC in Santa Cruz after I owned several businesses.
