Avalanche Warning Issued for Mount Shasta Area Through Friday

The Mount Shasta Avalanche Center has issued a backcountry avalanche warning for south-central Siskiyou County as powerful winter storms move into the region during the holiday week.
The warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, through 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 26, covering high-risk backcountry terrain around Mount Shasta, the Castle Lake area, and the Eddy Mountains.
Forecasters say two storm systems will impact the area in quick succession. The first arrives Tuesday and continues through Wednesday, followed by a stronger second wave Wednesday evening through Friday morning. Combined, the storms could drop up to five feet of snow above 6,000 feet, with wind gusts topping 60 mph and fluctuating snow levels—conditions that significantly increase avalanche danger.
Large avalanche run-out zones on Mount Shasta, including Avalanche Gulch and the Old Ski Bowl, should be avoided until storm snow has had time to stabilize. The avalanche center warns that slides could run long distances, reaching mature forests, valley floors, or even flat terrain.
Officials strongly advise against traveling in avalanche terrain during the warning period and urge holiday visitors to check daily forecasts before heading out.
