How many pistols and rifles do American Law Abiding Citizens own? 400 to 500 million firearms!

IF we didn't have rifles and pistols during the Revolutionary War our Democracy (the envy of the world) never could have started in the first place. The same is true now!

The ONLY reason why our democracy is still here at all now is the 400 to 500 million pistols and rifles we have here now.

Any nation would have to be crazy to attack the U.S. with an army because they would be picked off one by one by American citizen snipers one by one until they were all dead. This is a reality that every nation on earth understands with 400 million to 500 million Arms in the hands of American citizens ever since the Revolutionary war. Every family then had at least one rifle to kill varmints and whoever stole from or attacked their family. The same is likely true now.

Or will be soon after what we have all seen in Minneapolis, Minnesota!

American citizens own an estimated
393 to over 500 million firearms, with estimates often cited around 393 million as of 2017-2018, according to the Small Arms Survey. This equates to more than one gun for every person in the U.S., making it the only country with more civilian firearms than residents. While, as noted in Pew Research Center, about 30-32% of adults own a gun, a significant portion of the total stock is held by "super owners" who own 10 or more firearms.
Key Data on U.S. Gun Ownership
  • Total Volume: Estimates range from 393 million (2018) to over 500 million (2024), driven by high, consistent demand.
  • Per Capita Rate: There are approximately 120.5 firearms for every 100 residents.
  • Global Share: U.S. civilians own roughly 40% to 46% of the entire world's civilian-held firearms.
  • Types: While exact breakdowns of rifles vs. pistols are not universally tracked, the total 393 million+ figure covers all civilian-owned weapons, including rifles, shotguns, and pistols.
  • Ownership Density: While ~43% of households reported owning at least one firearm in 2023,, a 2017 study found that 3% of American adults own roughly half of the total civilian gun stock.
  • Purchasing Surge: Between 2020 and 2023, gun purchases saw record highs, with over 1 million background checks for purchases for 57 consecutive months.

Note: There is no national, comprehensive registry of all firearms in the United States, meaning these figures are estimates based on production, imports, and survey data.
