Yes. AI Could be a panacea for all human problems or lead to either human extinction or permanent human suffering one or sometimes all of these things at the same time.
So, what the Pope is saying is a question mankind needs to be asking right now or else the next 50 to 100 years will bring either human extinction or literally "HELL ON EARTH" for everyone.
What this brings to mind for me though is Descartes philosophic Saying:
"There is nothing so good that no bad may come of it and nothing so bad that no good may come of it."
Since this is the physical experience of most people on earth this is also something to think about.
