What many people don't seem to realize is that Cell phones often don't work at all in these remote places. This is the first thing likely that kills people. However, then there is a thing on Iphone 14 and after (newer ones) where your phone becomes a Satellite Phone into space to show people where you are in a 9-1-1 call even if you are out in the ocean often as long as the Iphone 14 or newer can reach the satellite and get a hold of someone in authority who can rescue you wherever you are.
But, another problem is that people who live in cities are so used to navigating by Google maps or something like that that they forget that their phones aren't usually going to work very well or at all deep in the wilderness unless they are on top of a peak within vision of a Microwave tower because deep in a valley this isn't going to work at all. And even if you are out of alignment with the satellite you won't reach the satellite either from your phone. So, often one needs to actually buy a U.S. Forest service map at a Ranger station for whatever area you are traveling into. Also, you need water and a good sleeping bag and to check the weather before going into any wilderness area.
In 1970 on college break two friends and I almost died on Mt. Shasta in a white out in about 5 or 6 feet of snow during a white out blizzard on Christmas Vacation because we didn't know a big blizzard was coming in (Because we were immortal College students then in 1970 and all about 21 to 23 years old so we thought we knew everything but almost died in a blizzard white out that snowed about 5 feet of snow overnight. So, the only reason we really survived this was that we dug a snow cave when we realized we couldn't even see where we were at all in a blizzard white out and found that we had hiked on snow shoes in a circle so we dug a snow cave to survive the night which worked.
So, unless you are prepared (and we were the lowest altitude ones on the mountain that night who didn't lose fingers to frostbite too because we had good gloves to keep our hands warm (likely ski gloves or wool mittens. This would be Christmas Vacation from College Sometime between December 26th and January 1st 1970.
