The most electrical thing that they had in 1859 in the U.S. would have been the telegraph

They operated by Batteries. I'm not exactly sure how they charged these batteries though then. Then they had telegraph poles all across the U.S. to send messages via the Morse Code. However, when the 1859 Carrington Event happened in the sun, telegraph paper caught fire, they disconnected the batteries and signals still traveled through the lines, Operators were shocked by the electricity in the lines after they disconnected the batteries.

So, you can imagine all the problems we would have now with such an occurrence when magnetic media (all hard drives on computers and cell phones fried and all or some of the types of batteries now had caught fire (including in EVs like Teslas and others. So, all of a sudden you would have all electric cars catch fire through their batteries worldwide wherever the Carrington Event from the Sun hit.

It is estimated that a Carrington like event would cost 2 trillion dollars in damage to all electrical infrastructure on earth including laptops, Cell phones and all Electric Vehicles and regular gas and diesel engine would be fried too so they wouldn't start either because there would be no ignition systems or starter motors or electric motors of any kinds working ever again.

Of course if it only hit one side of the planet, the side that got hit could theoretically buy everything electric from the side that didn't get hit?

But, we don't know how long that Carrington event type of situation would last. If it continued for 24 hours or more then it's possible nothing electrical would ever work again on the whole planet if it was above 10 feet below ground. And all passenger jets would crash when hit with this Solar flare of plasma too. So, if they didn't immediately land when the first warning of this hit earth (before it arrived) they would likely have minutes or hours or days  to land depending upon how fast this Carrington event of Solar Plasma was heading towards the earth.

begin quote from quote regarding the Carrington event of 1859:

  • Telegraph Disruption: Electrical surges flooded global telegraph networks. Operators received shocks, telegraph paper caught fire, and some systems continued to transmit messages even after being completely disconnected from their power batteries.
