Which is exactly what it was from World War II through 1973. If you got drafted whatever life you had before ended. It broke up relationships who never saw each other again or when they did the men especially were so crazy they weren't often safe to be around (especially during the Viet Nam War). You can see one of the examples of this in "The Big Lebowski(1998) with Jeff Bridges where John Goodman plays the part of a man with pretty serious PTSD from the Viet Nam war. And many other movies about the Viet Nam War demonstrated how murderous and dysfunctional many men were who came back from this war.
However, to be realistic here after World War II it was 100 times worse all over the world than the Viet Nam War. Children were taught to run from Veterans of World war II when I was growing up so they wouldn't be killed by accident or on purpose.
So, as bad as the Viet Nam War was for my generation World War II was 100 times worse of what happened then to people with PTSD. Also, PTSD wasn't even a designation yet.
They just called it "Battle Fatigue" or some other euphemism.
