How does one start a business?

In the 1960s and 1970s and 1980s people seemed to look at all this differently then. It was more about what they called then "Cottage Industries". What do I mean by that?

It meant doing something like this: "You worked a a part time job simultaneously while starting your business often in your garage (of your parents usually) or something like this.

For example, Apple Computer started in Steve Jobs' father's garage when Steve was the Business mind and Steve Wosniak was the technical mind in Apple Computers when they first started. So, businesses starting in parents garages happened a lot from maybe always but especially during the 1960s to 1980s because this was a low overhead way to start a business.

People often think you need 30,000 to 50,000 dollars or more to start a business. However, this just isn't really true. A Parents or relatives garage will be fine for anything that you want to build or sell online.

And your overhead is almost nothing. So, theoretically you can live at home, build stuff in your garage to sell all over the world. (As long as there is a market for what you are selling).

HOWEVER, now this is an important thing to know about home businesses. If you are low overhead enough you can usually (if you have a special Niche in what you are selling) be okay if your business is making under about 250,000 dollars a year. The problem becomes if you make more than that then bigger businesses are going to want part of your action and could put you out of business. If you know this going into all this you are much better off. Because competition can end your business in a month or a few months or a year. So, as long as you have a handle on your particular niche in business often you can stay like that at under 250,000 dollars gross a year for years and years because it isn't worth it economically for other businesses to compete with you sometimes.

Now, it's also true that this was the 1960s to the 1980s and the world has changed since then and competition of all kinds is much more fierce now too both nationwide and worldwide. So, I would study all this more carefully now than I would have then. Also, computers and AI and the Internet has changed a lot of things too. So, even though we still own one business even now I wouldn't really know how to start again completely in this business environment if I was a young person now because everything has changed so much since the 1960s to 1980s.

So, be sure to do enough research so you aren't put out of business even before you start by not knowing enough of the nuts and bolts of how to succeed in a particular business.

Even I was in my late 20s before I could "Wear enough hats" successfully to be in business and make a living doing any business without a whole lot of help from friends and family members. However, if there is an existing business that your family owns this is the easiest way to get into owning another business too.

So, be very practical about all this because you need enough practical knowledge and to be able to wear a whole lot of hats successfully for any business to be successful, especially for a small cottage industry business that you might start in your parents garage to begin with.
