Most of my life I have been doing prayers since I was born of one kind or another. I started as a Mystical Christian and I still would describe myself as one. However, over time I have added what I have found around the world that works for me to be happy and to stay alive better that I have found in my travels.
The basic Idea seems to be that humans tend to be neurotic (at least the most intelligent ones where they worry too much about everything in their lives to the point of it being counterproductive. Now, that's not to say that some times it's important to be concerned about things. But, in our American culture often we are too concerned and this causes mental and physical problems too.
So, staying centered or finding a way to stay centered no matter what is happening around us can be helpful. For example, for me, I often want to know a minimum about serious health issues which is enough to survive them but not enough to scare me to death.
So, learning prayers and mantras to occupy your mind through scary situations in life can calm you down and overlay these prayers and mantras in your life to keep calming you down and help you to stay centered.
Of course the real balance here is about knowing when things are important to think about and then also knowing when the things you are thinking about are counterproductive to your physical and mental and emotional survival.
So, once again "what you think about you become".
So, prayers and mantras are about maintaining center so you can actually survive your life ongoing more than anything else I find.
So, prayers and mantras are really about: "How to mentally and physically survive your life all the way to a happy old age if possible" more than anything else.
Though it's good to be realistic about what is happening in your life on all levels it's also important to find ways to center to survive your life so we all don't just die of overwhelm suddenly at a young age.
So, finding a way forward to center yourself enough to make good choices is a good idea always.
