This is actually pretty unusual for California. The last big tropical storm caused flooding in Mt. Shasta and the Palm Springs area and turned Palm Springs to mud then a few years ago. Then it hit hidden Valley on Mt. Shasta and caused a flood and new stream down mt. Shasta. So, now, every time it rains hard it now it floods out the High School Football Fields and the Junior High SChool playing fields and fills them with rocks and debris and costs them at least 60,000 to 100,000 dollars every time this happens now in Mt. Shasta city to remove these rocks and debris from the flooding caused originally by the tropical storm.
So, the point is that Tropical storms are very very very unusual to hit California ever until the last few years and because of our extremes of altitudes and large deserts this can really cause havoc in California and other Areas like Nevada and Arizona that have large desert areas too where there are not enough trees or bushes or grass to slow down the water when it comes full bore out of the sky.
