begin quote from AI Overview
Ground-level (tropospheric) ozone is a
powerful oxidant formed when sunlight reacts with industrial and
vehicular pollutants like nitrogen oxides and volatile organic compounds.
Human Respiratory Health
- Airway inflammation: Inhaling ground-level ozone irritates and inflames the lining of the respiratory system, much like a chemical sunburn on the lungs.
- Reduced lung function: It causes shortness of breath, wheezing, coughing, and pain when taking a deep breath.
- Aggravated conditions: Short-term exposure worsens asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema, while long-term exposure correlates with increased risks of premature mortality and cardiovascular harm.
Ecosystem Harm
- Cellular leaf damage: Ozone enters plants through tiny leaf openings (stomata) during normal gas exchange, oxidizing and destroying internal tissue.
- Stunted photosynthesis: It halts a plant's ability to convert sunlight into energy, slowing growth and reducing overall forest and vegetation productivity.
- Increased vulnerability: Weakened plants direct stored energy into growing new leaves instead of roots, making them far more susceptible to insect pests, diseases, drought, and severe weather.
- Habitat disruption: Long-term damage alters entire forest ecosystems, degrading water movement, soil nutrient cycles, and wildlife food sources.
Agricultural Crop Yield Reductions
- Visible leaf injury: Crop leaves develop yellowing, bronzing, reddening, and tiny light-tan spots that destroy usable surface area.
- Lowered food production: It stunts the production of roots, seeds, and fruit in sensitive staple and commercial crops—such as wheat, soybeans, beans, and corn.
- Economic loss: Ozone stress cuts global agricultural output by tens of millions of tonnes annually, resulting in billions of dollars in economic and food-security losses.
