My family had been introduced to him and he was known as a master of the White Tara Long life practice and had been sent from India by the Dalai Lama to help Lama Yeshe of Boulder Creek above Santa Cruz to pass over and for him to reincarnate as a Spanish boy then who I met later in 1986 when we were invited along with Geshe Lobsang Gyatso for the dedication of his Stupa (a memorial for the Lama's remains like you see all over the Himalayas on tops of ridges of mountains or even in valleys. People often come to pray at these stupas in the Himalayas too much like the bones of Saints are often put in Catholic Altars all over the world in churches.
So, my wife and children and I had a good friendship and connection to Geshela (endearing name) for a Geshe.) so we met him in 1985 in Bodhgaya, India because we were in Asia anyway at that time in Thailand at KoI Samed Island snorkeling then. So, we flew to Kathmandu, Nepal and rented a car and driver to take us to the India Nepal Border named Johnnie and we took mostly buses after that to Bodhgaya, India where the Buddha became enlightened under the Bodhi Tree there 2500 years ago (about 500 years before Jesus).
So, we spent from December 1985 until April of 1986 in mostly India and Nepal (I would say we spent about 2 months in each country during this time.
