It's possible that 8,500 to 12,000 jet passenger planes would crash on earth during a Solar plasma event like the Carrington event

Why? Because the planes with wires like small planes with wires controlling surfaces might be able to land when their engines electrically fried and quit by gliding if the pilots knew to keep their noses down enough not to stall the wings while descending (glider pilots know about this by the way).

But, jet passenger planes with electrical assists when the engines quit couldn't land and just would crash. Why?

Because electricity is needed to move control surfaces on any plane in order to not die in a Carrington Event type of situation.

So, likely one day in the next 100 or 200 years 8,500 to 12,000 jet passenger planes likely will fall out of the sky all at once everywhere on earth over land or sea or lake or river or mountains or whatever. But, they would likely crash straight down and not in any glide pattern so hopefully those deaths will be quick.

I suppose if a parachute big enough to stop a plane from crashing was installed this  might be the only way people would survive this if they didn't have their own parachutes on board to begin with and know how to use them.
