Could someone kill you by hacking your car's software? Yes.

  • Imagine you are driving at 70mph on a freeway with cars all around you. It is raining and might start to turn into snow at any moment. The road is slippery but people haven't slowed down yet so you are just keeping pace with traffic so you are safe. At this point someone hacks your software through your on board phone hands free system or Bluetooth and puts on your brakes through your onboard computer software system which throws your car into a skid because they are all on (all 4 at once full on) in all that traffic. Likely you are dead, paralyzed or severely injured as a pile up of multiple cars, trucks etc.

This is not a fantasy but what carmakers have done by not having stronger security on your on board software. The brakes are used to stop carjackers by ON Star and other services. But, if a hacker did it you just might be dead instead. Imagine some 9 to 13 year old who likes doing this because he is mad at his Mom or Dad or sister or brother. Or because he has just entered puberty and doesn't know how to deal with his feelings yet.

Either way you are still just as dead.

  • Or you are having an argument with your significant other. Someone records this and uses it to blackmail you for hundreds, thousands or millions of dollars while you are driving your car by hacking into the bluetooth or on board hands free phone system that connects automatically to your cell phone or smartphone.

  • Note: This might be another reason to own a car that was made before software and computers were in every car.
