Somebody has to be bold enough to get things done and to respond to calamities when they arise. If a spider is bothering my wife or daughter I will hear their screams from the other room and I will either take the spider outside (my preference) or dispatch it from this world depending upon the spider and the circumstances. And the same could be said of any creature I have to deal with. Humans we can figure out non-violent approaches to deal with anything that comes up.
So, am I a barbarian? Someone in every family has to be in order for that family to survive anything that comes up in life.
My wife and I often joke that to be a successful wife and husband team it is necessary to raise children for there to be a "Bitch" and a "Bastard" not all the time but some of the time in order to protect the family from all comers. If you don't have this combination at least some of the time then that marriage or family will not survive as a unit.
