I was walking by the TV and this was on and he had just lost his clothes on a day that likely was between 45 and 61 degrees. His clothes bag had washed down the stream he was fording so he was naked except for leather wrist strengtheners for picking up weights and stuff. I was wondering what he was going to do next not to freeze in these kinds of temperatures. There was sun light out so if he ran he might be able to generate enough heat not to go into hypthermia. However, when his next clothes stash (one of about 25) that he stashes underground various places turned out to be mostly just a hat and a few other things but not real clothes I wondered what he was going to do next.
He talked about "Stone Clothes" by picking up a rock and showing it to the cameramen. But, then he got a 4 foot to 5 foot by 2 to 3 inch dead limb from a tree and began digging with it when he got down to about a foot or two below the surface there was ground grey rock in the form of a grey clay mud which he spread all over his body for warmth. Though when he ran it would slowly flake off it would also keep his body heat better than just being naked. Interesting survival technique!
It makes me think that the blue stuff the picts had on in battle might also have been glacial silt stone clay too to keep their body heat in so they wouldn't go hypothermic during battle and hallucinate too when they were out in the cold for too long a time. So, maybe the blue paint was glacial silt stone clay.
Note: As you can see by the screen shot of my 60 inch flat screen TV he looks a lot dressed in his "Stone Suit" of Glacial Silt Stone Clay like the Picts did way back when in Scotland.
My wife has about 21 episodes saved on our Tivo DVR at home. She says it is helping her in her recovery from knee replacement surgery. I have met people from the 1960s to the present who choose to live like this. He is one of the sanest ones which is obvious from watching this show. Living alone in the woods takes a person back to a shamanistic way and animists way of looking at things which is very primal. But also it makes a person much more real in every way. The intensity of this lifestyle isn't for everyone. But, some people love this lifestyle. I just like to visit the forests go 4 wheel driving, climb mountains and kayak and go skiing and snowshoeing. I still like what civilization has to offer in the way of niceties, even though too much civilization makes everyone crazy as a bat.
So, sanity for my wife and I is watching someone who lives like this. He is more sane than most people from living like this for a long time. However, like I said it isn't for everyone because some people would just go nuts living like this completely. Most people need more companionship than he does. Whereas the forest and all it's creatures are his companions and his religion. This is beautiful when it works.
Also, in this episode he makes Moss clothes and builds a fire at night while still wearing moss clothes puts the embers under him with a layer of sand on top and covers himself with sand. Even though the temperature got below freezing that night he was just fine with moss clothes and embers under the sand keeping him warm while he was covered with dirt.
People freak out and die when they could survive like he does. There is always a way to survive almost anything if you understand what it is.
To the best of my ability I write about my experience of the Universe Past, Present and Future
