So, this began a wonderful relationship with Garage sales in our lives then.
About 10 years before we had discovered garage sale were really great for a youngish family trying to make ends meet to get furniture for a country house. Then we wanted to set up inexpensively for our 2 1/2 acres and A-Frame we were building. Here is what we found then in the early 80s locally:
A Huge antique clawfoot bath tub
A great antique Wood cook Stove
The wood cook stove had an oven which meant we could also save money by making our own custom breads that we liked and we could also bake cakes and all sorts of other things too.
These were both really important to quality of life out in the woods 10 miles from the nearest Gas Station and 7 miles from the nearest AC electric or phone lines from 1980 to 1985.
Solar power was very expensive then in the early 1980s so we did with Aladdin Kerosene Lamps or smaller kerosene lamps or just with candles inside for reading. However, you can buy reflectors for candle lanterns or kerosene lanterns to make them brighter in one direction for better reading. However, the Aladdin Lamps are extremely bright and no reflectors are needed at all.
However, Aladdin Lamps and all Kerosene lamps are sort of smelly so that takes some getting used to.
I had a gasoline powered water pump also if I wanted to water something or pump water up into a tank for gravity feed into the house as well. But, like I said in 1980 solar powered things just weren't that efficient or inexpensive then like they are now relatively speaking.
Also, it is important to realize there were was an XT and an Apple Computer around then but not Ipads, Iphones, or cell phones (no matter how big they were) then (unless you include military walkie talkies or radio phones that some people had in their cars or truck or CBs. So, we had no phone, no TV, but did have radios. This was a very simple life that was wonderful at that time in my life and my wife's life. My older kids who experienced this had many different points of view about this. On the one hand they liked being home schooled but didn't like not having that many friends around besides the three of them a lot of the time. By age 12 the oldest asked us to move so he could go to a good public school once again. So, we moved to the SF bay area and bought a business.
