Not understanding what Russia really wants is dangerous

I was reading the above article mostly quoted from another source and started to think more about this. I thought that what Russia wants now is not just Putin wanting it. And if the world doesn't understand what Russia actually wants it is very dangerous for the whole world. The issue important to the rest of the world in regard to Russia, Putin and Ukraine is not what is important to Russia at all. They are looking in a more long term historical context and especially not just thinking about what has happened since 1990 when the Soviet Union Collapsed. So, not seeing how Russians including Putin see things is really dangerous and might spark long term conflicts of various kinds. And another danger is the devaluation of the dollar by using the Yuan to trade between Russia and China. So, all these things are a threat to future harmony between nations. So, understanding is very important or bad things could happen not just now but for 25 to 50 years into the future.

I think trying to see Russia now in the context of 1917 to 1990 isn't really useful. However, seeing Russia in the Context of the last 500 years might be. Because Putin isn't a communist anymore. He might be a dictator but even if he is he is now seen as a Christian Dictator in the mold of Vladimir the Great (who he is named after) who brought Christianity to Russia in the First place and made it the state religion. So, if the world is approaching Putin like we approached the Soviet Union and Communism from 1917 to 1990 then the world has failed and doesn't understand what is really happening now at all. So, because of this NATO is not a very effective tool in regard to Russia. I'm not really sure what would be better but it is sort of inviting everyone to your party and not inviting Russia. It is sure to piss both Russia and China off. So, you start with people you are trying to make friends with sort of pissed off because of NATO.

We are not in the same era as 1917 to 1990. I would say this era began on 9-11-01 in the beginning of the new century. What does that mean?

It means whatever we think it means. Which means the world isn't effectively dealing with the major changes yet which also likely means some very big rude awakenings for everyone concerned.
