Mr Putin, who has a penchant for adventurous stunts, previously explored the Gulf of Finland and Lake Baikal in submersibles. In another of his well-publicised exploits, he went scuba diving and brought up ancient Greek pottery shards that his spokesman later admitted had been planted.
Yesterday, he went down 83 metres in a three-seat submersible to see the remains of a Byzantine trading ship, which he said dated back to the 9th or 10th century.
Speaking by radio while still under water, Mr Putin said he hoped the find would shed light on Russia's historical development.
Meanwhile, the president's famously extravagant press secretary's taste for luxury is under the spotlight once again after an opposition leader claimed the Kremlin official was honeymooning on board one of the world's most expensive yachts.
Dmitry Peskov was photographed wearing a €570,000 watch during his wedding to Tatiana Navka, a figure skater, on August 1.
