Syria and Russa (as the Soviet Union) go back to around 1956 in their association together as nations.
Iran and Russia go back to at least 1980 in their association as nations.
So, Cold War style (Syria and Iran belong to Russia).
However, even though the majority of Syrians are Sunnis, Russia is ONLY aligned with the Shiites of Iran, Assad and now Iraq.
You might say, "Why isn't the Iraqi Government the U.S. installed aligned with the U.S.?
Answer: Because all Shiites are naturally aligned with Iran, and then Assad in Syria first.
And even though the majority of people in Iraq are Shiites it was always ruled by a minority Sunni government (Saddam Hussein) first by the Baathist party.
Then the U.S. drove out Saddam Hussein.
But, the generals and officers of the Iraqi Army then and now are mostly Sunni (Until many of them joined ISIS because of being upset at the Shiite government the U.S. installed as the rightful majority government of Iraq.
However, then the Sunnis were irate at being shoved out completely from IRaqi Government. This is why ISIS (which is Sunni) came to power in northern Iraq and took Mosul and many other cities.
Sunni Iraqi generals and officers in the IRaqi army tricked the Shia line soldiers into running from their U.S. donated military equipment which then became ISIS along with many IRaqi Generals and officers who went with this equipment to ISIS. Also, many Chechen Sunnis from Russia also have joined ISIS as well as Sunni volunteers who want to die (to go to heaven) from around the world.
Assad is Alawite Shiite and aligned with Iran and Hezbollah which is an Iranian funded terrorist organization interested in destroying Israel that works out of Lebanon.
Then there are the Sunni rebels which evolved from peaceful demonstrations against Assad but when children and women who peacefully demonstrated were caught and tortured to death by Assad's government they became Sunni rebels who have fought Assad, IRan, Russia and Hezbollah ever since.
Russia has recently returned to Syria despite economic sanctions against them by Europe, the U.S. and a lot of the rest of the world.
However, Russia is now bringing tanks and jets and missiles into Syria. People are wondering why Russia needs Air to air Missiles like they have brought because ISIS doesn't have an air force.
However, all Sunni nations, Nato and the U.S. do. So, are these air to air missiles for them?
The answer likely is "yes".
The U.S. is well trained for "Cold War" tactics since world war II. However, Sunni pilots being less disciplined in "Cold War" preventing a nuclear war tactics might be drawn into fighting with Russia.
However, I'm thinking this is a trick by Russia to have an excuse to either invade or bomb Saudi Arabia.
Imagine Russia feeling it could bomb all oil storage areas in Saudi Arabia or oil drilling facilities there because of some infraction with a Saudi or other Sunni jet fighter or bomber?
So, this might be where Russia intends to go now. Because they aren't going after ISIS at all. They are ONLY going after people who want to overthrow Assad. But not ISIS at all.
