People often don't realize that the Ambassador was told by the state department before he was killed by either Al Qaeda or ISIS soldiers that he wasn't safe enough in that consulate for them to be happy with him staying there any longer. However, to be a good Ambassador and loved generally by the people of Libya or any country is a good ambassador and Chris Stevens was definitely a good Ambassador you have to take some risks and he always did historically. So, one way to view this is it was only a matter of time in these situations that he was going to get killed the way he was operating in Libya. Because where they got him was NOT an Embassy. Embassies are usually more like fortresses or castles in that they have an outside wall with wire (sometimes even razor wire) to keep hostiles out.
However, Benghazi only being a consulate was more like a private home than anything else. So, it really could not be defended successfully when 20, 50, or 100 people armed with Kalashnikov sub machine guns and grenade launchers show up unexpectedly like they did during this raid on our Benghazi consulate. Also, it isn't generally known either but local Libyans supporting our American Ambassador were killed (I was told by someone making a documentary there that 17 local Libyans died trying to defend our Ambassador and his consulate and men there.)
So, as usual there are many elements left out in the news. The biggest element left out is that the American Embassy was in Tripoli and not in Benghazi at the time so Benghazi was sort of a known death trap for this kind of thing regarding our consulate and Ambassador Chris Stevens was advised to spend as little time there as possible because defending against exactly this kind of onslaught might fail.
So, blaming Clinton for this when Ambassador Chris Stevens made this choice himself and had been advised by the State department not to stay there and that he stayed there despite this recommendation. Then you get a clearer picture of what actually happened there.
Basically, because of the situation that Chris Stevens put himself into (through no fault of his own) he could not be saved or properly defended because a private household is not a castle or embassy. So, there really was no way to save him given the situation as it was and 17 Libyans died trying to save him too on top of everything else.
