Though 51% of the people support the government they must not really understand how dire this situation is regarding their Iphones worldwide. Apple has some of the best incryption methods (likely better than Android and Windows which is why Apple really does not want to create a door where there wasn't one before with a key that wasn't there before. Because once you do this there is no security where the MAGIC genie then stays in the bottle and never comes out again.
In fact, it is almost certain to get loose because it would be worth billions and billions of dollars and you know it is almost certain (99.9999% that it is going to fall into the wrong hands). It just isn't possible when that amount of money is involved worldwide.
So, the only one that has the vested interest to keep the incryptions safe is Apple along with android and Windows phone makers because in the end they are all in this together. Because of Apple gives up it's incryption today, windows is tomorrow and Android is the next day. Because if Terrorists know the government can get into an IPhone they will choose one of others until no smartphone can be used for credit cards or money transactions on earth.
So, if Apple gives in the likelihood is within 10 years there won't be anymore smartphones because of terrorists and governments.
My son, who is a tech said that it likely would take about 5 to 10 years for anyone to break Apple's present encryption (who isn't apple). So, it can be done it would just take that much time for most people to do with almost any amount of money.
So, we either keep financial security for all smartphones or likely they will just cease to be.(one by one). first apple, then windows or Android (all within 10 years time).
