Because it is the basis of human existence.
Otherwise everyone would kill themselves while killing others like animals sometimes do.
Without compassion towards yourself and others civilization ends.
Compassion for yourself and others is the only basis of civilizations worth having here on earth.
Otherwise, we all go extinct pretty soon.
