Alligators freeze snouts in ice to stay alive: Video
It appears that they know they have to breathe even when the surface of their water is frozen. So, they freeze their snouts out of the water in place so they can still breathe and not die. IF you are an air breather you have to find some way to breathe. This is in North Carolina by the way.
