Note: Renamed Article: regarding snow around Mt. Shasta now and in the past

Note; Because it is late in the year the snow is melting at 3500 to 3700 feet more quickly. The ground isn't frozen most places below 5000 feet in elevation or so now. So, the best skiing is going to be above this altitude from now on until snow melts off at that altitude or higher to around 9000 to 10,000 feet between now and August or September or later sometimes. So, my friends texted me and told me they were able to take their oldest all wheel drive car and drive in and out and "Track" their long driveway across many acres to get to their house okay this morning. So, it isn't as bad as it might be if this were February or January or even December.

My worst experience with a blizzard was in 1970s from Bunny Flats in late December on Christmas Vacation from college with two friends because we almost didn't survive that experience over about 36 hours time without a house or car to survive in where we dug a snow cave with our snowshoes to survive overnight in a complete white out when the temperatures outside were in the 20s Fahrenheit and heavily blizzarding so we didn't know where we were exactly. So, our only hope of survival was to stay put and to dig a 5 foot deep snow cave to survive in then in December 1970 in between Bunny Flats and Horse Camp Sierra Club emergency Lodge for Climbers.

Many people I know (including myself in the 1980s) have had or do have 2 1/2 acres or more of land since the 1970s (I bought mine and we had it from 1980 to 1989 when my ex-wife and I moved to Hawaii then with some of our children who weren't grown up yet.

So, the problem with this is only one friend of mine with this much acreage has a snow plow to plow it which is near where my property was in the 1980s. Other friends don't go in for owning a snow plow because it can be very expensive on many different levels especially if you use your main vehicle to plow. Because it is very very hard on transmissions, engines, tires and everything else to plow because of the stresses it puts on the vehicle. So, for this reason it is more cost efficient to put a plow on an older less expensive vehicle so you aren't destroying your new truck or car by snowplowing with it. So, most people don't want to put up with the repair expense of putting a snow plow on a newer vehicle they use for traveling long distances.

So, one way is to hire someone to plow your roads into your property so you can actually get out with your vehicles. So far there is at least 18 to 36 inches in most properties around Mt. Shasta or more. This is just too much except for the very tallest ground clearance vehicles to drive through and even then they would have to have the best off road snow tires to do this if we are being realistic here.

Note: After talking with my friends the snow is melting off faster because of how late in the year it already is (March 2nd) because the ground mostly isn't frozen any more in town.
