George Wallace was eventually shot and crippled because of his Segregationist views

 Governor George Wallace was considered the strongest advocate of Segregation in the 1960s and 1970s by the way. He was a Blue Dog Democrat which still existed then. What is really interesting about all this is that Abraham Lincoln was a Republican so it is important to notice that what Republicans and Democrats have stood for has drastically changed over the last 150 years.
