I think we need to look no further than Saint Francis of Asisi which our own San Francisco here in California is named after.
How did Saint Francis Become enlightened?
He was in a battle and got battle fatigue and likely PTSD as a knight for Asisi in Italy. So, when he came back he was wounded and almost died. One day he got up from his wounds and walked out onto the roof and picked up a bird on his hand. This was the beginning of St. Francis' enlightenment and the beginning of the Franciscan Monks ever since which are still a part of the Catholic Church today.
Also, I believe all the traumas (medical traumas mostly) helped enlighten me in this lifetime too. Many people would have died as babies or young children but I did not (By God's Grace) and so I'm still alive here at almost age 77 in 2025 after having been born in 1948. I'm not comparing myself to Saint Francis of Asisi in any way. However, I do remember going into battle alongside him then as I was also a knight for asisi then too and we were also childhood friends and I became one of his many monks in his new order of Franciscan Monks too then.
Of course I also believe that Saint Francis is one of the many incarnations of Saint Germain along with Milarepa in Tibet.
