Bear under Altadena home showing no signs of leaving

Bears in Southern California likely don't hibernate the way they do in colder climates. They might sleep more in places like Yosemite. But, in Southern California the temperatures stay sort of moderate year around. I doubt Altadena has even one day of freezing weather all year long. Even where I live near San Francisco many hours to the north by car here on the ocean it is unlikely to have even one day of Freezing weather year around. However, temperatures in the 30s (above Freezing) and 40s especially are common in winter here, freezing almost never happens except maybe 1 or 2 days a year at most. So, the need of hibernation generally speaking isn't as important to bears in California generally speaking unless it snows a lot where they live like in the Sierra Nevada mountains or something like that.

“I feel nervous all the time,” homeowner Ken Johnson said. “I’m always looking over my shoulder to see if he’s coming out.”
