Because many people on earth will not survive these times. However, here in the U.S. economically at least we are doing better than most other nations simply because we have oil to haul our food to market and to harvest our food. This isn't true in many of the nations on earth which will cause often starvation and deaths now worldwide.
So, being grateful for the food we eat, the place we live, for our friends and relatives helps us face the world with less fear than most people on earth have right now.
